Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 boasts a number of worthy new editing features and, taking advantage of the popularity of photo sharing, introduced a new online sharing service via Photoshop.com, which launched in October.
New Features
Users of Photoshop Element 6 will find the new version a worthwhile upgrade. The popular quick fix, guided edit and full edit features have been bolstered with some helpful new tools.
* In the Quick Fix mode there is a new Touch-Up panel that includes a new one-step Bluer Skies Smart Brush. It works great on well-defined, unobstructed skies like an ocean horizon, but if your image has a lot of clouds, tree branches and leaves in the skyline the tool may have some difficulty differentiating.
* Another new feature is the Toothbrush Quick Fix, which whitens teeth (actually it seems to lighten them) in one step, but can be used multiple times.
* The Scene Cleaner is one of the best new features in the Guided Editing Mode. You can easily clean your image of cars, people, and other unwanted elements. To achieve this you take two similar images then draw a line over the element you want to remove. The software then fills in the empty area with elements of your main photo. It works amazingly well, and will be a handy tool for those inevitable photos where someone or something gets in the way of your "perfect" shot.
* Borrowing from Photoshop, Adobe has added an "action player." This allows you to use pre-recorded macros to perform the same series of edits on multiple images. However, you are limited to the macros that come with Elements or those you can find online; you cannot record your own.
* The Full Edit Function has layers and advanced editing tools and filters. Adobe has added a Smart Brush, enabling you to choose from almost a dozen preset brushes to select and apply contrast or brightness to certain areas of an image.
Photo Sharing
The biggest new feature in this release is the online service, Photoshop.com. According to Adobe there are two levels of membership, a free basic membership that gives you 5BG storage, interactive sharing and access to your photos from anywhere. The Photoshop Plus Membership includes ongoing delivery of tutorials, artwork and templates, interactive photo sharing, access to your photos and videos from any computer, and 20 GB of online storage and automatic backup for a $49.99 yearly fee.
At the heart of the Organizer is the capability of putting your images into albums and tagging them. The more you adopt this system, the easier it will be to use the sharing service, which uploads images album by album rather than image by image. However, if you just want to upload a couple of images you can put them into their own album. The synchronization capability is quite handy. If you make a change to an album on your desktop, the change will automatically be made in your online version. You can set your sharing to be private or public and automatically send invitations from MS Outlook. The backup system works by backing up your albums, not every individual image on your hard drive.
Photo Organizing
The Organizer program is still one of the best available. While Adobe didn't make major changes, in addition to the standard tagging options and the album system at its core (see above), it has added a new text search box that searches metadata as well as keywords. For example, using the search filter you can look through all the metadata including captions and file names.
